The Role of Digital Technologies

As a high school mathematics educator, digital technologies play an important role in my classroom. My school district uses the learning management system Canvas, which is an efficient way to post classroom notes, assignments, and materials. Check out this Canvas Quick Start Guide video to learn more. I have found that screen recording video lessons has been a great tool to provide to students, especially if they are absent. It is also a quick way to answer a question from a student when we are not physically in the classroom. Google Drive file sharing has been a tremendous help in working with my department and PLCs. We are able to file share and have access to all kinds of resources in one central location. I have had very positive experiences with all of these digital technologies.

The only negative I've experienced has been with Google Docs. For a math teacher, the formatting is sometimes not correct with mathematical equations. So, using Google Docs to create resources is not always the best option. However, there are still many positives to using the Google Drive platform to share documents.

Now more than ever while we are in the COVID-19 global pandemic with so many unknowns for the future, digital technologies provide so many opportunities to educators. It feels like the whole world is operating digitally now, so it's important for everyone, especially educators, to have the skills to effectively use current digital technologies. These digital technologies help with work completion, communication, and connection with colleagues, friends, and family.
